Birdbox Fanøy – A Window to Wild Western Nature

Here, you live with a view that truly takes your breath away—360 degrees of raw, unfiltered connection to the ocean, the fjord, and the dramatic archipelago that surrounds you.

From the large panoramic windows, you can look straight out onto the sea as it crashes against rugged skerries and islets, experiencing nature in constant motion—an ever-changing, living canvas you can sit and observe for hours. There is always something happening: clouds drifting by, waves rolling in, light shifting from hour to hour, and a rich, vibrant birdlife all around you.

How to Get to Fanøy

Parking at Florø Terminal is convenient, with only a short walk to the passenger boats. Register your car in the EasyPark app. You will need to take a scheduled boat to Fanøy quay. Several boats depart from the same area, so we recommend arriving early to ensure you board the correct one.

Timetables can be found on the Skyss website or in the Skyss Travel app. Select your date, time, and route—from Florø Terminal to Fanøy quay (or vice versa).

Please note that some departures are “on-request” stops. This applies to departures from Fanøy quay—not when boarding in Florø. For these departures, you must call the boat in advance before leaving Florø. Contact details are available in the Skyss travel planner online or in the app.

When You Arrive on Fanøy

The walk from the quay and the local shop takes approximately 35 minutes. At the end of the trail, your reward awaits: a cabin perched at the very edge of the world. The path is clearly marked with “Birdbox” signs along the way. You will first follow the asphalt road toward Kvernhusvågen—near the Fanøy lake, the hiking trail begins. From there, simply follow the marked path all the way to the cabin.

The Cabin

The cabin itself is simple, yet thoughtfully designed—like an elevated camping experience. Comfortable, but without compromising the surrounding nature. It includes a combustion toilet, solar panels for charging small devices and lighting, and a small kitchenette where you can prepare simple meals.

What We Recommend You Bring:

Proper outdoor clothing and footwear
The hike from the quay to the cabin takes around 35 minutes and crosses varied terrain that can be wet, steep, and slippery. Good hiking shoes are essential. Dress according to the weather and consider bringing an extra layer or change of clothes.

Drinking water
There is no running water in the cabin. You must bring all the water you need for drinking, cooking, coffee/tea, and brushing your teeth. Bring extra to be safe. As there is no running water, handwashing is not possible—please bring suitable hygiene products.

Simple food and snacks
The cabin does not have a stove or cooktop, but it is equipped with an electric kettle for simple meal preparation—such as tea, soups, oatmeal, or freeze-dried hiking meals. There is also a Nespresso capsule machine for coffee.

Comfortable clothing and warm layers
Temperatures can vary both outdoors and inside, especially in windy or rainy conditions. We recommend wool layers, warm socks, and comfortable indoor clothing for a relaxed stay.

Warm weather note
On sunny days, the cabin can become quite warm. To regulate the temperature, we recommend leaving the door open during good weather.

Earplugs and sleep mask (optional)
In rough weather, wind and waves can generate noticeable noise. Many find it atmospheric, but if you are sensitive to sound, earplugs may be useful. A sleep mask can also be helpful for light-sensitive guests.

Be cautious with doors in strong winds
The doors at Birdbox Fanøy can be difficult to open and control during strong winds. Please handle them carefully to avoid injury to yourself or others, and to prevent damage.
